Welcome to the Visual Edge, Inc. We offer a unique concept in slant board design for multifunctional use in reading, vision, and speech therapy. Our slant board makes it easier to read and write, plain and simple.
My daughter Delaney was first diagnosed with a disorder of sight, a visual processing problem in 2004. As part of my daughter's Individual Education Program (IEP) my wife and I were told we were required to purchase a slant board to help Delaney cope with her vision processing issues. The only slant board available at that time was a large and bulky wooden board. We purchased this board and it became a permanent fixture on her school desk. My daughter was devastated by the presence of this large, obtrusive board and since it was not portable, it was a daily reminder to her and the rest of her class that she was a failure at reading. Additionally, her teacher did not like her entire desk space being occupied by this board, which made it impossible to do other class projects that required a level work surface. Her teacher now had to find another work station to accommodate her which made Delaney feel even more of an outcast in her classroom.
This started my quest to find a more functional slant board. After extensive research, I could not find a single board that would fit her needs. I decided then and there to develop my own slant board. After thoroughly researching the fundamentals of a slant board, I designed my first prototype. I would like to acknowledge the assitance of P.A.V.E (Parents Active for Vision Education) in my research and understanding of Vision Therapy and development of my VISUAL EDGE Slant Board. They were a great help and a great source of encouragement.
The first two slant boards I made went to my daughter Delaney and her Visual Therapist, Jean Nagel. They both loved the VISUAL EDGE® Slant Board. My daughter was ecstatic, because she could now fold the legs of her Slant Board and place it in her school desk. Delaney's teacher was ecstatic because she now had my daughter's desk space back. And Jean, her vision therapist was ecstatic because she now had a much more compact, and versatile slant board. As the word spread about my VISUAL EDGE® slant board, there were hundreds of requests to purchase my board from doctors, therapists and parents of children with visual processing problems. I was manufacturing them by hand and had to find a better AND less expensive way to make my board.
I am a pilot for American Airlines and one of our pilots at AA had a manufacturing/import business here in San Diego. I contacted this pilot Jamie Kocher, and his business partner Steve Raketich about manufacturing my slant board. They liked the idea very much. They have been successful business partners in San Diego since 1986. We formed Visual Edge, Inc. immediately and began our search for a manufacturer that could fill our needs. After several trips abroad, we located a manufacturer that was able to build a top quality slant board at a very affordable price. Over the past 2 years we have made several improvements to my original slant board and now make the best, most affordable slant board in the world.
Something as simple as a slant board may seem obvious. As a matter of fact, at one point it was. You may remember when you attended school that all the desks were slanted. They had been built like this for decades. For some reason the school systems lost the knowledge of WHY and went to flat desks. This flat desk was most probably cheaper and required less space, but the most tragic result of this desk was that it resulted in a work station that had a detrimental effect on our children's ability to process information. Our Visual Edge slant board is designed with a 22 degree angle. This is the optimum angle for visual processing. The desk is back!
